And, laughing, he chased Wally all the way home.

‘Hey, Wally!’ said Sam, Wally’s best friend. ‘You know how much fun we have when you come to my house for a sleepover?’

‘Of course!’ said Wally.

Sleepovers at Sam’s were brilliant. His house was lovely and tidy. His mum and his dad were friendly and kind. His baby sister Jane was really cute. Better still, she was very small so she didn’t want to join in with their games.

As well as playing games, Sam and Wally watched TV and read comics. Then, late at night, when everyone else was asleep, they took torches and sneaked down to the kitchen for a midnight feast. They raided the cupboards and made delicious secret sandwiches with whatever they found.

Nothing had ever tasted as good as a secret sandwich midnight feast at Sam’s house – especially after a week of Foulpest’s toad bogey pasta.

‘Well, I was just thinking...’ said Sam.

He was going to ask Wally to another sleepover! Fantastic! Wally thought about all the games and toys and comics he’d take with him.

‘I was just thinking how much fun it would be to have a sleepover at your house for a change,’ said Sam.

Wally’s heart sank.

If Wally’s parents had been around, of course Wally would have asked Sam over at once.

But Wally’s parents weren’t around. They were abroad, doing something very important for their very important company.

So Wally was being looked after by his uncle, Foulpest. Foulpest was an ogre – a real one, with warts and great big pointy ears with hairs sticking out of them and everything. Foulpest made a mess wherever he went and Wally was worried that if Sam saw the state of his house, or tasted Foulpest’s disgusting food, he’d be horrified and wouldn’t want to be his friend any more.

‘I’d love to have you for a sleepover but erm... ’ said Wally, thinking quickly, ‘the house is being painted at the moment.’

‘Oh,’ said Sam. ‘That’s okay. You can always come for a sleepover at my house instead.’

‘Brilliant!’ said Wally.
